One of the most favorite days of those who are fond of making practical jokes and would love to have a good laugh once in a while, yes you got it right, it is April Fools ’ Day.  I am not a big fan of this holiday because some would really take all their efforts just to make someone look stupid.  Little do we know about its origin but we would all agree that this holiday has been part of our tradition and almost celebrated worldwide.

Observances Around the World

In the Western side of the world, April Fools’ Day is popular and is widely practiced.  It is usually celebrated by sending someone on a fool’s errand, playing pranks and making people believe of silly things.

Ancient Rome used to have a festival called Hilaria wherein they celebrate the resurrection of Attis Hilaria.

The occasion is celebrated with masquerades and general good cheer. Hilaria is synonymous to hilarity in English and the modern definition of Hilaria is Roman laughing day.

The French people call the 1st of April as “Poisson d’ Avril” or “April Fish”.  The children would basically paste a photo of a fish on the back of someone and cry out “Poisson d’ Avril”.

Iranians play pranks on Sizdahbedar, a day of celebration which has a similar theme to April Fools’ Day, it is also celebrated on the 1st of April.

In India, they play jokes and throw colorful dyes on each other on their Hindu festival called Holi, it is quite similar to April Fools’ Day.

Origin of April Fools’ Day

Tracing the origins of April Fools’ Day has been a tricky ordeal.  There are no clear history that would actually pin point its exact history but there are few theories where it all started.

One of the widely known theories was way back 1582 when Pope Gregory XIII issued a papal bull which states the celebration of the New Year from April 1 to January 1 that is when the Gregorian calendar was used and accepted.  Those who still practice the New Year between March 25 and April 1 were called April fools and they were subjected to practical jokes and pranks thus marking this light-hearted holiday.
